Safe School Policy

For the safety of students, staff and visitors to our schools, the Board of Education of the Weber School District has adopted a strict


SAFE SCHOOL POLICY


which absolutely prohibits the following conduct in school facilities, on school grounds, or during scheduled school activities.

  • Any threat of act of violence
  • Possession of any type of weapon, real of facsimile, regardless of intent
  • Any form of gang-related activity
  • Any type of criminal behavior
  • Any destruction or defacement of school property
  • Willful disobedience or persistent defiance of authority or disruptive behavior including the use of foul, profane, vulgar, and abusive language.

Violators of this policy may subject themselves to the following:

  • Immediate request for police investigation
  • Automatic suspension from school
  • Mandatory parent or guardian conferences with school or district authorities
  • Referral to district Student Services Office for placement determination

In cases involving severe or repeated violations, the student:

  • May be placed in an alternative educational program
  • May be referred to other programs in an effort to resolve the problem
  • May be expelled from school.  (A one-year expulsion is mandatory for an incident involving firearms.)

Digital Media Devices School Policy

West Weber Elementary School

 

STUDENT POSSESSION/USE OF PERSONAL DIGITAL MEDIA DEVICES

I. Digital Media Devices include any item that can store information in a digital format including but not limited to: Cell phones, cameras, computers, recorders, PDA’s, radios, mp3 players, computers, games, etc.

 

II. Use of Digital Media Devices. Students may not use digital media devices at school during instructional time from 8:40 until 3:25. If parents feel that sending a phone or other digital media device to school is necessary, they may do so at their own risk. The school will not be held responsible for lost or stolen items. All such devices will be turned off and left alone either in a student’s backpack or desk, but may not be handled during instructional time.

 

 

 

 

III. Exceptions. The exceptions to this rule are when a teacher has a special need or occasion where the devices are deemed to be appropriate for an instructional use. If there is a medical or other need, individual exceptions will be considered by the principal.

 

 

 

IV. Consequences for Violation of Policy

Note: Misuse of digital media devices is addressed in Weber School District Policy 8350 Digital Media Devices and Policy 5200 Student Discipline Policy (Including Safe School Policy).

A. If a student has a digital media device in school, the device will be confiscated and held in the office until a parent can pick it up. There will be no warnings given.

 

 

 

V. Notice to Students and Parents of Policy

 

 

A. Parents will be notified of school policy and consequences at the beginning of each year of the policy with the other policies mandated by state officials.

B. Parents who wish to contact students during school hours should call 452-4280 and we will forward any message to students. Due to the large volume of calls received, we recommend that calls come in at least 40 minutes before school is let out.

 

 

VI. Confiscated Digital Media Devices.

 

 

A. When employees confiscate a digital media device, they will turn it into the office. They will not search the device unless the principal determines that there is reasonable suspicion to make the search.

B. If the device is found without a known owner, a search of the device to find the owners name may occur.

C. The office will do their best to guard and protect confiscated cell phones, but are not responsible for loss, damage, theft.

D. All devices that have not been picked up before June 5 will be donated.

 

VII. Other Provisions

 

 

A. Students bring digital media devices on school property or to school activities at their own risk. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged electronic equipment.

B. Students are strictly responsible for their own digital media devices. If devices are borrowed or taken and misused by non-owners, device owners are jointly responsible for the misuse or policy violation(s).
